Facebook Will Never Let You See Who's Viewed Your Profile

If you use Facebook, there's a good chance you've encountered some app or some friend claiming they've found a way for you to see who has been viewing your profile. Chances are, it was a scam.

In fact, a few months ago, there were reports circulating about such scams. One in particular, security firm Sophos said attracted 60,000 clicks in just a few hours. Such scams still pop up from time to time. Your best bet is to ignore them, no matter how curious you are.

Facebook has acknowledged in the past that there is no way to view this information, but a post on Quora makes it pretty clear that there never will be a way either.

When someone asked the question: "Will Facebook ever offer a feature like LinkedIn's, where you can see who has viewed your profile, Facebook Director of Engineering Andrew 'Boz' Bosworth simply says:

"No."
From the sound of it, you probably have a better chance of seeing a Facebook-branded phone

My advice to you is to only let people you want to see your profile be your friend on Facebook.

4 Ways to Improve Your Twitter Strategy

A few months ago my friend Dr. Ben Hanna led an extensive statistical study to discover the optimal tweeting strategy by running matched tests of tweets over a period of weeks. He uncovered some very interesting ideas that will help you get more out of every tweet!

Tweet quality versus tweet quantity – The study looked at the relevant importance of tweeting only when you had something really interesting to pass along (quality focus) versus a strategy of tweeting with frequency to make sure your content was always in front of your audience (quantity focus). The study showed tweet quality is MUCH more important than quantity.  Tweets that provided a higher average number of clicks per tweet with a track-able link correlated to higher follower growth.

I guess this finding verifies my hunch. People who tweet on a schedule just strike me as unapproachable and disconnected.  While the study definitely verified the “quality” strategy, you still have to be in the game – average tweets/day during their testing ranged from 2.9 to 11.0.

The first words are critical – At 140 characters, tweets are like headlines and people scan them quickly.  If you want to catch someone’s eye, think like an advertising copy writer and make sure that either the main topic keywords or a number/statistic are found in the first 3-5 words.

The results also recommended against using the standard retweet style (i.e. “RT @markwschaefer: …” to start the tweet), instead shift attribution to the end of the tweet (i.e. “… via @markwschaefer”) so people can concentrate on the first words.

Quality tweets live four days – If you measure the lifespan of a tweet by the number of days on which it receives at least one click, then tweets don’t live very long. On average, tweets with a clickable link received at least one click on four separate days with a range of one day (not a very popular tweet) to 23 days (very popular content).

Optimal time between tweets – In a study examining the number of clicks on business-related tweets, the optimal space between business tweets to attract the most clicks is either 31-60 minutes or 2-3 hours. Tightly packed tweets just don’t appear to attract as much attention as tweets with more space between them. The study really couldn’t explain the bi-modal distribution. The cause of the dip in click activity for tweets between 61 and 120 minutes is uncertain.

I found this research interesting and hope it will help you hit your tweet-spot on Twitter!  Any surprises?  What do you think makes a tweet work?

Is Twitter for Everybody?

The answer is no.

This is the question that eventually gets asked by every person and every company trying Twitter for the first time.  In the height of your initial frustrations, you may be wondering … is Twitter really for me?
Most social media hype-masters will tell you “yes.”   Indeed, there is probably some business use or benefit you could discover for everyone and every organization.

But after working with hundreds of students and professionals across diverse businesses, I’ve come to realize the answer is no — it’s not for everyone.
Here’s an example. One of my customers is a brilliant management consultant. An engineer by training, he does not come by marketing instinct naturally and asked me to help.
This is a customer who would be perfect for Twitter:
  • Small business-owner
  • Enormous, global market potential (needs a lot of awareness)
  • Small marketing budget
  • Selling differentiated personal services
  • No time to blog, develop extensive content, etc.
  • Tech-savvy
  • Is a charming, bright person with engaging personality.
And yet he WILL NOT TWEET.  I coaxed, cajoled, and threatened him. I’ve trained him patiently and even prescribed a daily Twitter regimen.  I demonstrated the power of the platform when I found him a potential new business contact on the very first day of our operation.  He didn’t follow-up and seems content with his tweet-free existence.
This may seem strange, but it isn’t uncommon.  I’ve found similar resistance from many people who can obviously benefit from this business tool. I asked my client ”why” and here is his answer:
“I’m not sure why really.  I guess the idle chatter (which is mostly what I seem to see when I log on)  just doesn’t make any sense to me.  There’s obviously some self-imposed barrier that I can’t or just don’t want to cross.  You were kind enough to introduce me to Twitter, and I appreciated that.  There’s the old expression about leading a horse to water.  Guess I’m just not that thirsty for Twitter water… at least yet.”
The Twitter Quitter
This type of reaction is not unusual. In fact I was a Twitter Quitter myself and had to really push through a few weeks of this non-intuitive communication platform before I started to understand it.
What is the difference between a Twitter-lover and hater?  Does success on Twitter lend itself to a certain personality type?  Some say it favors out-going people, yet introverts are quick to say that they love the platform as way to connect on their own terms and build quality relationships slowly. Maybe it has something to do with patience.  Perhaps it is being creeped out by the crowds or by having strangers “follow you.”
Honestly, I haven’t figured it out, but I do acknowledge the fact that some very intelligent and wonderful people just don’t like Twitter even when they can see the benefits.
What About Organizations?
Is there a business case for Twitter for every organization and company?  Like nearly every business question, the answer is, “It depends!”
Medical professionals, lawyers, financial managers, and defense contractors may have severe regulatory limitations on the information they can discuss in public.  Remember, Twitter is a form of publishing.
When it comes to business communications strategy, it really gets down to this: What are your business objectives?  What do you need to say?  Where do your customers get their information?
If your customers are not engaging in this platform you’re going to waste a big wad of time on Twitter and get frustrated.
But I want to suggest two big HOWEVER’s before you decide your business is not cut out for Twitter.
HOWEVER, you may not really know where your customers are getting their information, even if you think you do!  People are piling on to the social web in record numbers and are also spending an enormous amount of time there. In an always-connected world, the role of social media in the business and personal world is blurring.
Better check those customers again!
I have a client who resisted Twitter because she insisted that her customers had no interest in it.  I conducted some customer research for her — completely unrelated to Twitter — and discovered that “social media” was the number one marketing and business issue for the majority of her customers!  By getting in front of the curve and mastering Twitter before her customers were immersed in it, she capture a leadership position and guide them, become a valued subject matter expert, and even create new business opportunities for her company.
Now for HOWEVER number two — However, there are MANY other business benefits to Twitter beyond simply getting sales leads.  Even if your customers aren’t there in force, it is still an incredibly powerful way to learn, connect with thought leaders, and identify new business opportunities.
I have seen an incredible diversity of organizations thrive on Twitter, from pizza joints to florists, from mega-brands to my handyman (who I found on Twitter).  Colleges, hospitals, non-profits, shipping companies, government agencies, and utilities have all realized business gains from a Twitter presence.
There are just so many way to define success, create wealth, discover benefits, and even have fun with Twitter.  Clearly there can be benefits for anyone if they have the fortitude to stick with it.
How do you handle the Twitter Quitters in your organization?  Is it a matter of time or are you hitting a wall too?
This is an excerpt from my new book, The Tao of Twitter now available from Amazon and other book sellers.

Google Launches Iraqi, Tunisian Domains

Local search domains for troubled nations

Citizens of Iraq and Tunisia who are lucky enough to have Internet connections may now find it easier to conduct Web searches.  Today, Google announced the launch of the local search domains google.iq and google.tn for the two countries.
This is in many ways an interesting development.  For starters, it’s almost impossible not to think about the political and military turmoil in both countries (and in Tunisia in particular) and what effects Google’s move might have.
Perhaps the company’s trying to show its commitment to the free flow of information, hoping it can help locals make better decisions.  Or the timing could be coincidental, part of Google’s regularly scheduled efforts to reach more potential users.

Either way, the move does represent a milestone of sorts in terms of growth.  A post on the Google Arabia Blog noted, “This recent launch brings the number of local Google search domains worldwide to 184 with 15 domains in Arab countries.”
The post also pointed out, “Up until recently, users in Iraq and Tunisia had to visit other domains in order to use the search user interface in their language of choice.  With this launch, the new domains will enable users to access Google search in local languages like Arabic and Kurdish in Iraq and Arabic and French in Tunisia.  Eventually, this will lead to access to more locally-relevant content.”
Additional local search domains are supposed to launch this year, too, so keep an eye out for them.  Hat tip goes to Ahmad Al-Shagra.

How To Convert a Facebook Profile Into a Business Page

Pages can be for brands, artists, or causes

Facebook is letting (encouraging even) people to convert their personal profiles into Pages. It’s not that they want you to treat you personal profile like a page. They want you to convert it if you’re already treating it that way, because you’re violating Facebook’s terms of service if you’re using your personal profile for anything other than an individual person.
“Business accounts are designed for people who only want to use Facebook to administer Pages and run ad campaigns,” says Facebook on a FAQ page. “For this reason, business accounts do not have the same features as personal accounts. Business accounts have limited access to information on Facebook-when using a business account, you can view all the Pages and Social Ads you own, but you will not be able to view profiles or content owned by other people. Business accounts cannot be found in a search, and the owner of the account will not be able to send or receive friend requests.”
When you convert your profile, only your profile photo and friends will be moved to your page. You’ll still be able to log in from your original email address and password. When you convert it, this account will be the sole admin of the new Page, though you can add additional ones.
All of your confirmed friends will be converted to people who “like” your new Page.
Before going forward with the conversion of your personal profile, you should acknowledge what you’re giving up, as you cannot revert it back to a personal profile once you’ve changed it. If you’ve had your account for a while, you may have a lot of content, including photos and videos that won’t be making the transition along with you.
You can download your information by going to your Account Settings and clicking the “learn more” link beside the “Download Your Information.” From there, just click the “Download” button. The file will include:
- profile information (contact info, interests, groups)
- content from your wall
- Photos and videos
- Notes
- Events to which you have RSVP’d
- sent and received messages
- comments that you and your friends have made on your Wall posts, photos, and other profile content
It’s all or nothing, by the way. You can select certain aspects of this to download. You just have to get the whole thing.
You might also want to consider Facebook’s continued expansion into new realms.
Facebook has essentially become part of the fabric of the web at this point, with integration on most of the popular sites out there. In some ways, your Facebook account may be serving as your ID on the web (at least one of them).
Again, once you convert your profile to a page, you can’t change it back. We asked Facebook if there is anything stopping users from starting a new personal profile once they convert it to a Page. A spokesperson tells us,  ”If someone accidentally migrates their Profile to a Page, they can always create a new profile using a different email address and login information.”

Ranking The April Fools Pranks On The Internet

April 1st, a day that some cherish and enjoy, while others scoff at all the false information being released on the internet. You then have the people in the comment sections which are proud for discovering which news is fake, and is a prank. Which is followed by the people who show disappointment at being fooled. Some sites are better at April Fools than others, and here’s a list of the best I’ve come across today.
5. The FX Mature (The Aurors) Harry Potter TV Show
Site: IGN.com

Why it’s on the list: While the video is obviously fake, IGN should be commended for really going the extra yard to provide some April Fools shenanigans. For the past couple of years, IGN has released video based pranks and “The Aurors” ranks as one of their best. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ll especially appreciate it.
4. SlashTweaks is the Mad Libs of the Internet
Site: Slashdot

Why it’s on the list: The most obvious online April Fools prank is to simply make up a story and publish it for people to either be fooled by or call out. Slashdot deserves a nod for letting the April 1st proceedings be interactive. Most of the stories presented on Slashdot today have a few keywords which allow users to change them to their liking. Although this will only be available today, it certainly provides an interesting idea which might work in some capacity.
3. Toshiba’s 3D Monocle
Site: Toshiba.com
Why it’s on the list: Like IGN’s prank, Toshiba really stepped up and put some dedication into their idea by creating a video. Unlike IGN, this isn’t a content provider but an electronics company who relies on innovation to sell products. Which is what makes their idea so great; they integrated the fake tech directly into their site.
They created a legitimate looking landing page which has this “Important Consumer Notice” – Refrain from using two Toshiba Spectacle 3D devices simultaneously in each eye. Doing so may cause each device to render the corresponding 3D image in 3D yet again, resulting in an uncomfortable and infinite loop.
2. The Gmail Motion Beta
Why it’s on the list: Google took all the ideas used in the three listed, besides SlashTweaks, and forged them into a super prank. They didn’t just create a video, they made three videos for Google Motion. Like Toshiba, Google integrated the prank link directly into one of their most used platforms, Gmail.
They didn’t stop there, Google utilized fake science to explain the reasoning behind Google Motion. I also have to give the idea its due because it’s the only prank to fake me out. In my defense, I didn’t read anything on the page, and went straight to the download link. Stupid call to action buttons.
1. Facebook Partners With Zynga to Launch ‘Relationships’

Site: Techcrunch
Why it’s on the list: This might be a controversial pick, because I imagine many people would select Google Motion over this TechCrunch story. Hear me out. One of the key ingredients to pulling off a successful April Fools prank is plausibility. Of all the pranks I’ve seen on the internet today, this is one which could potentially happen on some level in the future.
Although it has shades of being possible, TechCrunch went a bit too far which was probably on purpose so people really didn’t get in a stir over the fake news. They announced that Facebook and Zynga would be partnering up for a ‘Relationships’ product. The idea is pretty interesting. Users would be able to track people they are potentially interested in dating, and could engage in social games to help break the ice and get to know one another.
The first couple of paragraphs in the story really draw readers into something which might be believable. However, the deeper you read, the more ridiculous the features sound. For instance, the picture I posted above would allow users to post what base they got to with a date. I won’t spoil some of the other jokes, but needless to say it becomes even more extreme the further you read on.
Due to the drawing in of readers, and providing an article title which sounds believable, TechCrunch gets the award for best April Fools joke in 2011.
Honorable Mention: GoDaddy.com CEO defends his elephant killing shenani…oh wait, that really happened.
What April Fools jokes have you seen that deserve recognition for their dedication, plausibility, and final punch line?
